Vlingo is a great Android 2.0+ application that facilitates voice-based search and speech-to-text entry. Android fans can now add check-ins to that list as Vlingo has partnered with Foursquare to announce a user’s location or find their friends with only a tap.

Vlingo now includes support to check-in to a location using its voice-activated commands. Someone can launch Vlingo and say, “Check in to Golden Gate Bridge” and the app will bring up that location. That person could then add a shout using the standard speech-to-text feature. They can also find friends by saying “Where are my friends” to see recent check-ins.

Also included in the new version is the ability to make status updates on multiple networks. Add in the features that already made the app great, and Vlingo’s on to something pretty cool.

It’s terribly difficult to get reliable statistics, as numbers tend to vary drastically depending upon whom you ask, but if you’re inclined to believe that Android is mopping up Apple and RIM’s declining mobile mindshare in the US, you’ll find nothing but corroboration from Quantcast. The analytics firm reckons a full one-quarter of mobile web traffic stateside comes from devices running Google’s OS, though it’s important to know that the iOS tallies apparently don’t include the web-friendly iPad. You also might want to note that this is mobile web traffic here — these days, we spend an increasing amount of our internet time in apps — and since we’re on a roll with the disclaimers, let’s just add that these numbers have nothing to do with a company’s financial success. Nokia can attest to that.

Many were reluctant to take part in the contest Verizon’s holding through their @DroidLanding Twitter account for the R2D2 special edition of the Motorola Droid 2. They’re doing it differently from the Droid X’s contest, though, as there are no scavenger hunts or GPS coordinates to mess around with. Instead, they tweet out codes and clues that you have to use to unlock certain areas of the R2D2’s website. Whoever is responsible for exposing the section they expose wins a free R2-Droid 2.

Thus far, two sections have been unlocked: the Apps and Widgets section netted Droid-Life’s reader Andrew Tarr a new phone, and someone else (yet to be named) has unlocked a gallery of images showing off the device and what appears to be an accompanying docking station (pictured above). For the rest of the gallery, be sure to head on over to the landing site now (and try to unlock more sections!)

Verizon’s going to be pricing the Samsung Fascinate to sell as new leaks show the device will be $ 199.99. It’s not much different from the pricing on other Galaxy S phones (unless you count Sprint’s extra $ 50 for the Epic 4G), but the text right next to the pricing lists “BOGA”: which we’ll just assume means it’ll be a part of the buy-one-get-any smartphone deals Verizon likes to run from time to time. All of this information is listed beneath a headline that states it’ll be launching September 9th. I feel like I’ve heard that date somewhere before.

Let me take you through this process. Let’s say that I’m hosting a birthday party for a toddler, and the theme is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I want to create little takeaways for the toddler’s friends using Cricut. I’ve answered my three questions:

• The focus of the project is takeaways for the guests.
• The audience is toddlers (and their parents, if I’m honest!)
• The theme is Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

The first thing I want to do is to take a look at the available Mickey Mouse Cricut Cartridges- doing that will help me to get inspiration for my project. I go to the internet and see that there’s a Disney Mickey and Friends cartridge with all of the main Mickey and Friends characters. I realize that each character has several different die cuts along with several houses and stores that Mickey visits.

I realize that I can create unique takeaways by using a simple oriental take-out box (unused, of course) and putting a character on each one. With the embellishments, I can create unique treat takeaways for far less than I would have spent at a party supply store, and the finished cricut project will be something that I will be proud of.

We’ve known about the improvements to GMail in the latest version of the GAPPS package for a while now, but it’s found its way onto the net as an installable .apk file for anyone with an Android 2.2 phone to install – no root required (it actually surfaced at the time of our reporting, but no one thought to actually look inside the flashable .zip file). Remember that big, honking red-and-black HTC slider that dwarfed an EVO 4G? It’s back sporting Verizon colors just as we were told, and with a few more confirmed specifications thanks to the ever-reliable FCC. The HTC “PD42100″ is still missing a proper internal codename, but test reports confirm it’s ready for at least CDMA 2000 and GSM 850 plus EV-DO Rev. A, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n WiFi at 2.4GHz frequencies. There’s no word on that 1.2GHz processor or 4-inch display, but it’s clear we’re looking at some chunky chiclet keys and there’s definitely a removable battery. We can’t wait to get our hands on what surely looks like the new king of Droids.

Update: As it turns out, the size of the screen has been staring us in the face for hours — we just had to think back to high school geometry class, specifically the Pythagorean Theorem. Starting with the FCC’s handy-dandy picture of the phone’s rear next to a square ruler, we had only to superimpose an image of the front on top, then calculate the diagonal (after translating to inches, of course) to discover it was a 4-inch display all along. Oh, and the phone has EV-DO Rev. A for data. [Thanks, Mark]

Well, with a ton of Android tablets being announced this week at IFA you didn’t think that Toshiba would let Samsung steal all of the Android tablet limelight, did you? It appears that the electronics manufacturer is going in head-first with Android as well with the new Toshiba Folio 100 that should be making it to the European market in Q4.

The tablet has all of the specs that you would expect in a "high performance" Android tablet. It boasts a 1024×600 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, 16GB of internal storage, Tegra 2 architecture, WiFi, HDMI-out, a 1.3MP webcam for video calls, an SD expansion slot, and Android 2.2 at a price of €399. Toshiba also has included some apps like Documents To Go, Evernote, Opera, and a Toshiba Media Player for some extra customization which, depending on your opinion, may or may not be needed. It all sounds great but according to Engadget the build quality and performance of the device is somewhat lacking. Also, something different from the Samsung Galaxy Tab is that there is no 3G access for voice calls or data.

So, it appears that we are finally going  to see some of these Android tablets that we have heard so much about in the past few months/years.  I highly doubt that this tablet or the Samsung Galaxy Tab will impact the sales of the iPad as there is way more marketing behind that device. But, at the very least we geeks get to have a choice of some compelling slate devices near the end 2010.
